Umno is facing its worst crisis since its formation seven decades ago.
PETALING JAYA: Umno today confirmed that six of its MPs have quit the party, as the former ruling party heads to a full blown crisis that could see it being crippled just seven months after losing federal power.
This comes after earlier announcements by the Hulu Terengganu and Tanah Marah MPs that they were leaving Umno.
Besides Rosol Wahid and Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz, the four others are Mersing MP Abdul Latiff Ahmad, Tasik Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahaya, Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin and Sabak Bernam MP Mohamad Fasiah Mohd Fakeh.
Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa confirmed that the party was notified of the decision by all six MPs.
“I wish them all the best,” said Annuar in a statement.
Contacted by FMT, Rosol, who is the Hulu Terengganu MP, made no secret of his intention to join PPBM.
“I have to take sides, either with PAS at the state level or Pakatan Harapan at the federal level so I can continue helping the people.
“So, I’ve decided to join PPBM in the near future, that is if they are willing to accept me,” Rosol told FMT.
In an immediate reaction, embattled Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged party members to remain calm.
“This will not affect the grassroots support. It is only temporary,” he said on Twitter.
Umno won 54 seats in the May 9 general election, which saw the party’s fall from grace after six decades dominating the government.
With the series of defections, the party is now left with 37 MPs.
Among Umno MPs who have quit the party are former trade minister Mustapa Mohamed, former Puteri Umno chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and former foreign minister Anifah Aman.
Other leaders who left the party include former communications minister Salleh Said Keruak and former Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia.
