KUALA LUMPUR: The youngest candidate for the 14th General Election (GE14), P. Prabakaran, 22, won the Batu parliamentary seat with a majority of 24,438 votes.
The law graduate garnered 38,125 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional’s Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai (13,687 votes), Pas candidate Azhar Yahya (10,610) and independent Datuk V. M. Panjamothy (383).
Prabakaran smashed a 41-year record held by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who contested for the Pekan parliamentary constituency at the age of 23 on Feb 21, 1979.
The election results were announced by Election Commission (EC) Returning Officer Anwar Md Zain at Sekolah Menengah Sentul Utama at about 10.30pm.
Anwar said a total of 62,805 votes were casted in the constituency, with another 297 unreturned votes were recorded.
He said EC recorded a total of 498 spoilt votes.
