Crime does not pay: Passers-by looking at the accident scene after the snatch thief was killed at the junction near Eco World in Taman Masai.

JOHOR BARU: A snatch thief trying to flee on a motorcycle from a pursuing crowd after grabbing a boy’s handphone was killed after the rider collided with a car.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Jokhiri Abd Aziz said the 20-year-old man who died was the passenger on a bike ridden by a 19-year-old accomplice.

In the incident at 5.15pm on Sunday, both suspects approached an 11-year-old boy in Taman Masai to ask for directions.

“The pillion rider then snatched the mobile phone from the victim and tried to escape but was chased by some civilians nearby,” Supt Jokhiri said yesterday.

The suspects tried to escape to Jalan Pulasan but their motorcycle collided with a car travelling from the opposite direction of the road.

The pillion rider died on the spot due to head injuries while his accomplice broke his left leg.

Checks showed that one of the suspects had criminal record for a drug-related offence.

“The surviving suspect is being detained after receiving treatment at hospital,” Supt Jokhiri said.

In a separate case, police found the body of a local man believed to have been murdered and dumped at a construction site near Bandar Baru Permas Jaya.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said the 22-year-old victim was found shirtless with wounds on his body, arms and left leg at 10.48am on Sunday.

Information from the public led police to four suspects, all male, aged between 20 and 26 years here and at Ayer Keroh in Malacca.
