KUALA LUMPUR: About RM4.2mil of drugs believed to be ganja have been seized, making it the biggest ganja haul in Malaysian history.
Federal Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the drugs were seized in two separate raids between 3pm on Saturday and 1.40am on Sunday.
It all began when police arrested a 38-year-old man near a parking lot after police found 160 compressed blocks of what is believed to be dried ganja leaves inside his car.
“That led police to a house where another 200 blocks were seized,” he told a press conference yester-day.
Comm Mohd Mokhtar said police subsequently raided another house in Bandar Laguna Merbok, Sungai Petani at about 1.40am.
“A total of 848 compressed blocks that weighed about 843kg were seized there.
“Investigations revealed that the house was used as a store. All in all, we seized 1,200kg of ganja. That is the biggest haul of ganja in our history,” he said.
Comm Mohd Mokhtar said the supply was brought in by sea from Thailand.
“It’s a year’s supply for local consumption. If a person consumes about 3g, about 400,000 people can consume it.
“We are looking for several people to facilitate our investigations,” he said, adding that the suspect was remanded until March 20.
Among other items that were seized included a watch and RM2,000 in cash.
Between Jan 1 and March 11, police busted two ganja syndicates and seized 277kg of ganja.
Last year, seven syndicates were crippled with a seizure of 1,290kg of the drug. In 2014, eight syndicates were busted while 368kg of ganja was seized.
