Thailand turn over Malaysia in AFF U-19 semi-finals
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia crashed out in the semi-finals of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-19 Championship in embarrassing fashion.
The Malaysians were trounced 5-0 by Thailand at the National Sports Complex in Vientiane, Laos.
Expectations were high on Malaysia especially having gone on an 11-week playing tour of Slovakia prior to the competition - winning 15 out of 17 matches.
But it was the Thais who stamped their class in Wednesday’s game with Ritthidet Phensawat scoring a brace. The other scorers were Worachit Kanitsribumphen, Sansern Limwatthana and Suksan Mongpao.
It could have been worse for Malaysia. The Thais dominated proceedings and even had two shots from Sansern hitting the woodwork in the first half.
The Malaysian defence, led by skipper Dominic Tan and Tan Yung Hong, simply had no answer to the fleet-footed Thai forwards, who were able to penetrate the backline with ease on many occasions.
Next up for the Malaysians is the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 qualifiers in China from Oct 2-6.
