Members of the public were shocked today by a video clip which showed an illegal street race accident on KESAS Highway

Members of the public were shocked today by a video clip which showed an illegal street race come to a screeching halt after a huge accident that took place on the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas).
In the 1.31-minute video, a group of Mat Rempit was seen racing while spectators lined the side of the expressway.
It is understood that the incident occurred early today and involved a few motorcycles and a Proton Exora heading from Shah Alam to Kuala Lumpur.
It is believed that a motorcyclist colided with the Exora from behind, which caused the rider to lose control before being hit by other motorcyclists.
Selangor Traffic Chief Deputy Superintendent Azmi Mansur said the accident occurred about 4.30am near the exit to Alam Impian, Shah Alam.He said there were no casualties though there were some who sustained bodily injuries.
“No deaths were reported despite what has spread on social media.
“The driver of the car involved lodged a police report at the Klang Selatan traffic police station earlier this evening.”
He said police were carrying out an investigation, including tracing those involved in the race.
The case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The section involved refers to reckless and dangerous driving.
It states that any person “who drives a motor vehicle on a road recklessly or at a speed or in a manner which having regard to all the circumstances (including the nature, condition and size of the road and the amount of traffic which is or might be expected to be on the road) is dangerous to the public shall be guilty of an offence”.
Upon conviction, it carries a punishment of up to five years and a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000.
However, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the term of imprisonment can extend to not more than 10 years and the fine is increased to between RM10,000 and RM20,000.
Meanwhile, Kesas Sdn Bhd assistant manager (traffic safety) Zainuddin Mohamed Nor said the accident occurred at Km29.7 of the Kesas Highway at 5.17am.
According to him, the accident involved a car and motorcycle, but no casualties were reported when their patrol team arrived at the scene.
He said when two Kesas patrol members rushed to the scene, they also found a Proton Exora by the roadside and believed that it was involved in an accident.
“No spectators were at the scene and there was the possibility that the victims were taken to a hospital or treated elsewhere.”

Police have denied that there was any fatality in an accident which resulted from illegal motorcycle racing on Kesas Highway as shown on a viral video.
The video depicts a group of people racing their motorcycles illegally on a highway before one of them crashes.
It had been said that the incident took place on Monday night at Kesas Highway near the Alam Impian turn off.
Selangor traffic police chief Deputy Supt Azmi Mansor said on Tuesday that while the incident shown on video did take place, there were no fatalities.
"The incident occurred around 5am yesterday and we are trying to identify those involved in the illegal racing," he said when contacted.
The video, which has gone viral with over a thousand views on Facebook since it was uploaded on the social media website.
