PETALING JAYA: The planned second red-shirt rally in Petaling Street has been cancelled on the advice of the authorities, said Malay Armed Forces Veterans Association president Mohd Ali Baharom, better known as Ali Tinju.
Ali Tinju, who admitted to being one of the organisers of Saturday’s protest, said the cancellation was to enable authorities to react to demands that more Malay traders be permitted to carry out business operations in Petaling Street.
He, however, could not guarantee that there would not be a rally despite the announcement, adding that he would not be behind any protest that takes place.
Earlier, police arrested Sept 16 red-shirt rally organiser Datuk Jamal Yunos on Friday night.
"We arrested him under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code to prevent a crime from occurring over his alleged statements that riots would occur in Petaling Street," Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad told the Star Online.
It is learnt that Jamal, the Sungai Besar Umno division chief, was detained at 9pm and was being held at the Dang Wangi police station.
Deputy IGP Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim had said that police would not compromise with anybody trying to organise the rally and would take a firm action.
