It was Mad Men's last hurrah at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.

And while the series lost out on the night's top honour to Game Of Thrones, Jon Hamm finally won Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series, after eight years of being nominated.

The 44-year-old got a standing ovation as he was given his very first Emmy, and then crawled onto the stage where he appeared to thank his ex-girlfriend of 18 years Jennifer Westfeldt in a humble acceptance speech.

It's about time!: Jon Hamm finally won an Emmy on Sunday, as he was named Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

Before giving his gratitude to a woman named 'Jen', Jon said: 'There has been a mistake, clearly. Thank you for that. This is impossible - to be named with all of those extraordinary gentleman, it's impossible to be standing here, up here.

'It's impossible to have done this show with this incredible cast, with these incredible people, these incredible writers, incredible crew, the network and studio who put this on, Lionsgate and AMC, am I saying that right?

'And it's incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here, so I want to thank the people to whom I owe an incredible debt, people who in my life have gotten me here, families who have chosen for some reason to take me in and be nice to me along this strange, strange road.

'There has been a mistake, clearly': Jon - who has been nominated for eight years - said it was 'impossible' that he had won for Mad Men

+67

Victory lap: The 44-year-old got a standing ovation as Mad Men celebrated its last hurrah at the ceremony

+67

Showing his silly side: Jon crawled onto the stage as Tina Fey giggled, and then gave his acceptance speech

+67

Up he goes: The actor had everyone giggling as he slid up to accept his award, before appearing to thank his ex-girlfriend

'So to Bud and Susie, and Mary Anne and Ted, and Ernie and Caroline, and Rick and Linda, and Gary and Sue, and my sisters, Cora and Jen, thank you all very much, I would not be standing here without you. Thank you to everyone who watched the show, and thank you for this.' Cora is the name of his dog.

While Jon has been up for eight consecutive years for Mad Men, this is his 16th Emmy nomination to date.

As well as Jon, Viola Davis and Amy Schumer took home their very first Emmys, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for the fourth year in a row.

+67

Losing out: While Mad Men was hoping to take home the night's top honour, it went to Game Of Thrones

+67

Celebrating: The cast posed backstage with their awards for Outstanding Drama Series

+67

That's a surprise: Veep won Outstanding Comedy Series - which has been won by Modern Family for the past five years

+67

Cheers to us!: The cast and crew giggled as they posed with their trophies backstage after the show

Viola gave a powerful speech as she accepted the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series prize for How To Get Away With Murder. She is the first black woman to ever win in the category.

'In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me to get over that line but I can’t seem to get there no how. I can’t seem to get over that line,' she said. 'That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. The only thing that separates women of colour from everyone else is opportunity.

'You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there so here’s to all the writers the awesome people. People who have redefined what it means to be beautiful to be sexy to be a leading woman – to be black. To the Taraji P. Hensons and the Kerry Wahsingtons, thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you to the Television Academy.'

+67

First time winner: Viola Davis won Outstanding Lead Actress in the drama category

+67

Record breaking: Viola is the first black woman to ever win in the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series category

+67

+67

Powerful: The 50-year-old delivered a moving speech about diversity, which had pal Kerry Washington in tears

+67

Tearful: It was clearly an emotional moment for Viola, who won for How To Get Away With Murder

Amy Schumer won for her funny acting, but she showed a more serious side on stage.

The comedian - who won Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for Inside Amy Schumer, blinked back tears as she delivered her unprepared acceptance speech.

Amy didn't miss out on cracking a few jokes however. 'We all had to get final draft once they picked up our show – we didn’t own it,' she said. 'Thank you to my head writer who had a baby like 10 seconds ago. She got drunk and told me I had to make my dream show.

+67

Her first Emmy: Amy Schumer showed a more serious side as she blinked back tears after winning Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for Inside Amy Schumer

+67

Surprised: The 34-year-old comedian hadn't been expecting her win, and didn't prepare a speech

+67

Funny lady: Amy still managed to crack a few jokes, as she thanked 'the girl who gave me this sort of smoky eye'

+67

Family first: Amy thanked her sister Kim in her speech, admitting she 'is the only reason I’m alive and breathing'

'Thanks to everyone who has helped me – the girl who gave me this sort of smoky eye. I love it.'

Amy added: 'I’m so proud – this show fights for what we believe in. I want to think my sister Kim, who is the only reason I’m alive and breathing. Thank you so much!'

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was unsurprisingly named Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy for Veep. It's the fourth time in a row that the 54-year-old has taken home the honour, and her sixth Emmy to date. But Julia certainly wasn't any less thrilled.

+67

She did it!: Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy for the fourth year in a row

+67

An honour: Seth Meyers presented the prestigious award to the 54-year-old Veep star

+67

'I love you gals': Julia thanked the 'powerful' and 'funny' women who were nominated alongside her in the category

+67

Caught on camera: Julia snapped a selfie with Mel Brooks as he presented Veep with their accolade

'Thank you very much to of course the Academy. I think it would be appropriate at this moment to quote our political satire Veep. "What a true honour it must be for you to honour me tonight,"' she teased, before adding: 'Oh I'm so sorry, Donald trump said that – it’s getting trickier and trickier to satirise this stuff.'

Julia graciously thanked the other nominees in her category - which included Amy Poehler, who has been nominated several times for Parks And Recreation and never won.

'I love powerful funny women – I love you gals so much., I do in fact,' she said, also thanking her co-stars and joking that she has lost her eyesight.

+67

Triumphant: Uzo Aduba broke down in tears as she won once again for Orange Is The New Black, this time in the drama category

+67

+67

Emotional: The star, who won Best Supporting Actress, wasn't expecting it after taking home the comedy prize last year

+67

'I appreciate you for putting belief back into my heart': In particular, Uzo thanked show creator Jenji Kohan

+67

Proud moment: The two-time Emmy winner kissed her latest trophy backstage after the show

And in a shocking turn, it was Veep that took home Outstanding Comedy Series – a prize that has been won by Modern Family for the past five years. The show took home four prizes in total - the same as Game Of Thrones, while Olive Kitteridge was awarded six.

Uzo Aduba broke down in tears as she won Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series for her role as Crazy Eyes in Orange Is The New Black.

Her co-stars Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon gave her a standing ovation, and she only grew more emotional as the weight of her big win began to dawn on her during the acceptance speech.

+67

+67

No surprises: The first award of the evening went to Allison Janney, who took home the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy

+67

Joking around: Allison playfully started singing her thank yous, but then made a serious point about addiction

+67

+67

Honoured: The 55-year-old thanked the other nominees - saying they deserved to be up there with her

+67

Whoops!: When she arrived on the stage, the Mom star realised she had brought up her blotting pad with her

‘I really just want to say thank you a thousand times – if I said thank you a thousand times it would not be enough to cover the things I feel for you Jenji Kohan,’ Uzo said of the show creator. ‘I appreciate you for putting belief back into my heart.’

She also thanked her cast and her family, for standing ‘beside me my entire life’.

Last year the show was nominated as a comedy, and Uzo was clearly shocked to win again in the more competitive drama category.

+67

+67

'I was even chewing gum': Peter Dinklage admitted he 'wasn't prepared at all' to win Best Supporting Actor for Game Of Thrones

+67

Thank you!: Peter thanked George R. R. Martin and Lena Headey, his 'inspiration and scene partner'. He then added: 'And everyone else in the cast which is like thousands of people, so goodnight'

+67

Well-deserved: FThis was the second win for Peter, who took home the title back in 2011 and has been nominated every year since

+67

His first Emmy at 71: Jeffrey Tambor took home the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series award for Transparent

+67

'I'd like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community': The star gave an emotional acceptance speech

Equally surprised to have his name read out was Peter Dinklage, who won Supporting Actor In A Drama Series for Game Of Thrones. This was the second win for Peter, who took home the title back in 2011 and has been nominated every year since.

'I wasn’t prepared at all - I was even chewing gum,' he admitted as he took to the stage, adding that he is 'still awed' by the performances of his fellow nominees - in particular Better Call Saul's Jonathan Banks.

'We’re only as good as our writers and I’m lucky enough to work with the greatest writers,' Peter said, before thanking George R. R. Martin and Lena Headey, his 'inspiration and scene partner'.

+67

Goofing around: Jimmy Kimmel chewed up part of the winning envelope before announcing Jeffrey had won

+67

Congratulations: Tony Hale won Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for Veep

+67

Hooray!: The cast of Veep celebrated after Tony Hale won, and Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche won for writing

He added: 'And everyone else in the cast which is like thousands of people, so goodnight.'

Allison Janney took home the first award of the evening in the form of Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy, for Mom.

The award - Allison's seventh Emmy to date - was presented by Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer.

+67

+67

Shock win: Regina King won Supporting Actress In A Limited Series or Movie for American Crime, and hadn't even prepared a speech

+67

Thrilled: Taraji P. Henson celebrated as she and Terrence Howard announced Regina as the winner

+67

Big win: Richard Jenkins won Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or A Movie for Olive Kitteridge

+67

'Hey Dad, what did you do last night?': The 68-year-old joked that he couldn't wait to tell his children he met Gaga

'I apparently brought my blotting thing up with me as well,' the 55-year-old said as she took to the stage, realising she was holding a pink pad with her, which she quickly threw into the audience. 'I'm just starting to cool down!'

Allison said to her fellow nominees: 'I feel like I won the lottery because you are all amazing and deserve to be up here as well. Chuck Lorre it is an honour - thank you for creating such a flawed character and immediately thinking of me to play her.'

She then started singing the rest of her thank yous, before making a more serious point about addiction: 'It is a privilege to work on a show that reminds us there is hope - lots of hope.'

+67

Short but sweet: As she too won for Olive Kitteridge, Frances McDormand said just a couple of lines

+67

Funny ladies: Amy Poehler (L) and Amy Schumer presented Allison Janney with the gong - the first award of the evening

+67

Here you go: Mindy Kaling presented Jon Stewart with the award for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series. The Daily Show also won Outstanding Variety Talk Series

+67

Coming soon: Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts were there to present Best Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, ahead of the release of their fox show Scream Queens last week

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series went to a shocked Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent. He has been nominated six times for different shows, but this marks his first win.

In an emotional speech, he said: 'I am so, so honoured. I had a teacher who said you have to act as if your life depends on it and now I've been given the chance to act because people's lives depend on it.'

He added: 'I'd like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you for your patience, thank you for your courage, thank you for your stories, thank you for your inspiration. Thank you for letting us be part of the change.'

+67

+67

Impressive presenters: While Lady Gaga made her first appearance at the Emmys, Tina Fey returned to present

+67

He's a lucky man: Rob Lowe must have been thrilled when he was paired to take the stage with Kerry Washington

+67

That's the way to do it: Ricky Gervais pretended to win an Emmy, when he was actually presenting one

+67

+67

Dynamic duos: Among the other presenters were Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liev Schreiber (L), and Eric Stonestreet and Jane Lynch

Veep star Tony Hale won Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for Veep - and thanked the show's cast and crew for the honour.

Meanwhile Veep's Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche took home Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series.

Regina King won Supporting Actress In A Limited Series or Movie for American Crime. She admitted she hadn't even prepared a speech, because she never expected to win.

+67

Big winner: Jane Anderson was thrilled to accept Outstanding Writing For A Limited Series for Olive Kitteridge

+67

Its best season yet?: Game Of Thrones won four awards, including for Best Directing, which was accepted by David Nutter

+67

Dream team: David Benioff (L) and D.B. Weiss accepted the show's award for Outstanding Writing

+67

Plenty to celebrate: Game Of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin was also celebrating his 67th birthday at the ceremony

Presenting the Directing Award in the comedy category were Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford, who won Guest Actress and Actor prizes respectively. The gong went to Transparent's Jill Soloway.

Olive Kitteridge won six awards, including Best Limited Series. Bill Murray won Outstanding Supporting Actor, but he had skipped the ceremony.

Frances McDormand won Lead Actress for the show, and kept her acceptance speech short but sweet. ‘We’re all here because of the power of a story well told. Sometimes, that’s enough. Thank you,’ the 58-year-old said.

+67

Light relief: James Corden cracked plenty of jokes before presenting one of the coveted awards

+67

+67

And the winner is...: John Oliver (L) and Adrien Brody presented prizes in the drama category

Richard Jenkins was named Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie for the series, and couldn't believe that he was presented the award by Lady Gaga.

'Hey Dad, what did you do last night?' he joked that he would tell his children. Richard thanked the cast and crew, and in particular Frances, as well as his wife of 46 years.

Olive Kitteridge also won awards for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing in the Limited Series Or Movie category.

Jon Stewart's last hurrah on The Daily Show was honoured with awards for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing in the same category.

He teased: 'To everybody on TV – cling to it as long as you can, like death, like in the titanic! This is the first applause I’ve heard. It is a barren wasteland out there.

Jon thanked his crew for the experience, before joking to the audience: 'Thank you so very much. You will never have to see me again.'

+67

Making them laugh: The ceremony was hosted by Andy Samberg, who performed a musical opening number

+67

Firm friends: Backstage after the show, Andy and Jon shared a hug

Meanwhile, The Voice won for Best Reality Competition Series.

During the ceremony, there was a special tribute to the end of several shows including Mad Men, Sons Of Anarchy, Nurse Jackie and The Colbert Report – as well as Jon Stewart and David Letterman’s hosting duties.

There was also an In Memoriam segment, which payed tribute to late celebrities including Joan Rivers and Leonard Nimoy, while What A Wonderful World played in the background.

Tracy Morgan made a surprise appearance to present the Outstanding Drama Series award, and received a standing ovation as he walked onto the stage unassisted, 15 months after the horrific car crash that left him in a coma.

Proving he is back to his best, the Saturday Night Live star said: 'Last year, Jimmy Kimmel said on this stage, "See you next year, Tracy Morgan." Well, Jimmy, thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my beautiful new wife, I'm here, standing on my own two feet.'

He then teased: 'Only recently I’ve started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lot of y’all women gonna get pregnant at the after-party.'
