PETALING JAYA, June 2 — A father’s recent escapades of stealing metal drain covers from the neighbourhood with the help of an unlikely partner — his own daughter — has got them into trouble with the law.
The father had been using his 14-year-old daughter to load his lorry with drain covers from the Subang Jaya neighbourhood and sell them to scrap metal dealers.
Their run came to an end when they were caught red-handed in Jalan SS18/5G at 7.30am yesterday.
Subang Jaya police chief ACP Yahya Ramli said a police team on crime prevention patrol spotted the lorry parked by the road side.
“The officers decided to take a closer look as they suspected something amiss,” he said.
“As they approached the lorry, they saw that the duo had removed covers from a nearby drain and trying to load them into the lorry.”
The police officers, who arrested the pair, found four drain covers in the lorry, which was confiscated.
Both have been remanded for three days for further questioning.
“There have been reports of stolen drain covers in the area and we will investigate to see if the pair are the ones responsible,” said Yahya.
A video recording of the duo showed the daughter getting off the lorry and stealing the drain covers in broad daylight, before driving off.
The video is in the hands of the police, who are investigating if the pair is responsible for similar thefts elsewhere.
