EN Star Style - Rihanna's CFDA Fashion Awards dress was "a little bit scandalous".
The 26-year-old singer made eyes pop at the fashion event in New York last night in a completely see-through dress, under which she didn't wear a bra. Featuring a halter-neck and covered in 230,000 Swarovski crystals, the piece was designed by Adam Selman, Mel Ottenberg's collaborator and other half. Rihanna wore matching sparkling long gloves and a glittering bandana.
While the piece has created mixed reactions, Adam insists they were going for a big statement.
“We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous,” he told Style.com. “The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is part of that.”
Mel seemed more affected by how revealing the gown was, but wasn't surprised that Rihanna opted to wear it.
“It’s so naked,” Mel added. “I don’t know if it’s shocking - I’m with her all the time, so my shock gauge is off, but I told her that I thought she was ready for this dress a while ago, and that I wasn’t. I’m the prude, and I’m just catching up.”
All the hard work put into perfecting the Bajan beauty's final outfit spilled into yesterday afternoon ahead of the ceremony. Adam has helped craft Rihanna's tour costumes since 2011 and helped co-design her River Island collection, so it's only natural the pair collaborated for this event.
"She could have had any designer make any dress, so for me it’s an exciting statement that she chose to wear me on such a big night of fashion. She has really put me in the spotlight," he smiled.

Rihanna accepted the 2014 Fashion Icon of the Year award during the bash last night, which she was handed by the US Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The prize is “given to an individual whose style has made a significant impact on popular culture on an international stage.”
“We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory,” CEO of CFDA Steven Kolb explained.
Other stars who dazzled last night include new mom Olivia Wilde in a black fringed Decades LA dress, Sophia Bush in an ivory long-sleeved meshed dress by Marchesa and Zoey Deutch in a white, blue and turquoise Diane Von Furstenberg mini-dress.
