KUCHING: Sarawak Chier Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is expected to announce his successor's name on Monday.
Taib, when asked by reporters after leaving the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak special supreme council meeting today said he "would announce his successor in two days time".
He was accorded a unanimous mandate by his party to pick a successor from a likely three aspirants although there was no a word or hint on whether Taib had resigned as chief minister although some immediate reports claimed that “his resignation was confirmed.”
There was also no word on whether Taib would vacate his state seat of Balingian, only that the successor will lead the Barisan Nasional’s charge in the next state election scheduled for 2016.
However, Taib is not about to fade away: the PBB endorsed the resolution to make him the next Yang di-Pertua as the reward to honour his contributions to the state, a move described by permanent chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar as giving the successor “steady hands”.
Asfia insisted that Taib’s imminent withdrawal would pose no problems and talk of instability was unfounded.
