SHAH ALAM: A Chinese New Year open house at the Selangor Menteri Besar's official residence took a tragic turn when a seven-year-old drowned in the swimming pool there.
The girl, Amanda Dany Shah, was with her parents who were catering food for the open house, organised by Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Amal Wanita Negeri Selangor (Pekawanis) on Saturday.
Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Azizman Alias said investigations revealed that Amanda had wandered off by herself while her parents were busy preparing the food.
"The girl was found in the pool located on the upper level of the house," he said when contacted.
According to sources, someone had pulled Amanda out of the water and tried to revive her before an ambulance arrived and rushed her to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, where she was pronounced dead at about 7pm.
Police received an emergency call at about 4.30pm and a patrol car was sent to investigate.
ACP Azizman said the case has been classified as sudden death.
A few hours after the tragic incident, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim tweeted his condolences to Amanda's mother, Rini Sutari.
"Takziah kepada Puan Rini Sutari & keluarga, katerer Majlis Tahun Baru Cina PEKAWANIS, atas kehilangan puteri Amanda Dany Shah. Al-fatihah," read Khalid's tweet.
Khalid's press secretary Arfa'eza Aziz said he was attending another function in Kuala Selangor at the time of the incident.
"There were about 400 guests at the open house held in the hall at the lower level of the residence," she said when contacted.
