Cops probing attempted assassination of Myanmar political leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are working with the Myanmar embassy here to establish the identity of the two motorcyclists who tried to assassinate two Myanmarese political leaders here.
City police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said he believed that they were Myanmar nationals who were fuelled by the conflicts in their country.
“The case is still under investigation,” he said.
Bernama reported that Rakhine Nationalities Development Party chairman Dr Aye Maung and Arakan League for Democracy Party chairman Aye Thor Aung were travelling in a BMW with two of their countrymen in Jalan Alor here on Thursday night when a gunman fired a shot, which went wide.
He fled on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice.
According to a source, the politicians had just left a shopping centre when they were shot at. “The politicians sped off to a hotel in their car.”
Aye Maung is chairman of a commission set up by the Myanmar government to investigate reports of ethnic riots in Rakhine.
