KUALA LUMPUR — According to The Star today, a taxi driver who allegedly ferried the suspected killer of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi, was sentenced to a total of 14 years' jail and ordered to be whipped six times for having a pistol, a magazine and four bullets.
Sessions Court Judge Azwarnida Affandi jailed him for 10 years and ordered Chew Siang Chee to be caned six times for possessing a Walther pistol and a magazine.
The Star report stated that she also sentenced him to four years' jail for having four bullets.
The sentences were to run consecutively, beginning the day he was arrested on July 30, last year.
Judge Azwarnida meted out the sentence after the prosecution succeeded in proving a case beyond reasonable doubt against Chew, 46, at the end of defence case.
“Your defence is only an inherently improbable afterthought and a bare denial.
“Therefore, I find you guilty and convict you of all charges,” The Star quoted her as saying when delivering her judgement today.
Chew was accused of possessing the pistol, a magazine and four bullets at Desa Cindaimas condominium in Jalan Kuchai Lama here, at about 5.45pm on August 3, last year.
On conviction, he faced 14 years' jail and six strokes of the rotan under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalty) 1971 for the first offence.
For the second offence, he faced seven years' jail or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both under the Arms Act 1960 (Act 206).
Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin was the deputy public prosecutor while counsel Ramesh Raj acted for Chew.
