Cops cracking down on illegal immigrants at Petaling Street last night.
KUALA LUMPUR: Ahead of the Chinese New Year, Bukit Aman and city police are cracking down on illegal immigrants and gang members in tourism hotspot Petaling Street.
An Ops Cantas Khas was launched on Friday in the chinatown, which saw the arrest of 49 immigrants.
Those rounded up included 24 Myanmarese, 21 Bangladeshis, two Nepalese and two Sri Lankans.
All of them were men and were arrested for offences under the Immigration Act 1959.
The 9pm raid, led by Bukit Aman Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division (D7) principal assistant director SAC Datuk Roslee Chik, also processed 45 others who were found with gang tattoos but were released later that night.
“This is in response to reports of gang activities thriving in the area, which could drive away tourists as it is an attraction.
“Our work here is to reduce the element of fear among the public who wants to come to Petaling Street to shop, especially tourists.
“The operations will be carried out every now and then here,” SAC Roslee said after the two-hour operation.
