PETALING JAYA: A research arm of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) has been ranked among the top think tanks in Asia and the Pacific.
Asli’s Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) was ranked No. 7 in the list of top 40 think tanks in the region in the “2013 Global Go To Think Tanks” report.
The only other Malaysian think tank on that list is the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Isis), which was ranked 10th. (Singapore Institute of International Affairs was placed No. 1).
The report, which was issued by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Programme at the University of Pennsylvania, was based on a survey of 6,826 think tanks in the world.
Asli co-founder and CEO Tan Sri Dr Michael Yeoh said the report was announced at the United Nations in New York on Friday.
In a statement, he said CPPS was also ranked 38th in the world among top education think tanks and 27th in the world among top transparency and good governance think tanks, where it was the only Malaysian think tank listed.
“We are humbled and gratified with the international recognition accorded to both Asli and CPPS clearly establishing us as the top think tank in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.
CPPS was also ranked 37th in the world for best advocacy campaign and 35th for best use of social networks.
Dr Yeoh also noted that Asli, among others, was also ranked 22nd as a think tank to watch with Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) at 31st position.
Other rankings included being on the 37th spot for best public engagement programmes and 47th for most significant impact on public policy.
It was also No. 47 for best managed think tank where it was the only one from Asean listed.
Asli was also the 29th for best new idea developed last year, he said.
Dr Yeoh said it was indeed satisfying for Asli to be in the ranks of the world’s top think tanks such as Brookings Institution, Chatham House, CSIS Washington DC, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Peterson Institute for International Economics.
“In many of the listings, we are the only think tank from Asean and Malaysia,” he said.
