Cops to go all out to nab errant motorists over CNY period

IPOH: The police will adopt a “total enforcement” approach to effectively reduce the number of road accidents and traffic fatalities during the Ops Selamat 4/2014 road safety operation over the Chinese New Year period.
Bukit Aman Police Contingent Internal Security and Public Order Director Comm Datuk Seri Salleh Mat Rashid said the police would be stricter with their enforcement to ensure motorists adhered to regulations.
“Police throughout the country will be taking uncompromising action whereby summonses will be issued against traffic offenders immediately.
“We are confident that motorists will be more cautious while driving on the road this time,” he told to reporters during a press conference here, Sunday.
“The police have set a target to reduce accident rates by five percent during Ops Selamat, which will be carried out nationwide from Jan 24 to Feb 7,” he said, adding that the police were confident of achieving their target.
Salleh also said that the police would step up patrols at residential areas to combat house break-ins during the festive period.
He advised residents who will be leaving their homes for the holidays to “balik kampung” to notify the police.
“I hope the public will contact and co-operate with the police to enable them to carry out their patrolling jobs at residential neighbourhoods,” he said.
Salleh went on to note that road accidents nationwide had fallen by 10.3% in two days after Ops Selamat was launched.
“I hope that the accident statistics and housebreaking cases will continue to show positive results over the next few days,” he said.
Salleh also said that he was satisfied with the preparations and efforts by police personnel in Perak for this year’s Ops Selamat.
“I am confident that they will be able to do a good job for this year’s Ops Selamat and help in this effort to reduce crime and accident rates,” he added.
