PETALING JAYA: A host of memes have inundated Facebook, with Netizens creating images that mock Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli and other political parties over the Kajang by-election.
Most of the memes centre around satay that Kajang is famous for.
One picture depicts Anwar holding sticks of satay with the caption “Satay Kajang Turun Harga!”, a reference to the Turun rally calling for prices to be lowered.
Another shows Anwar promising to promote satay to the world and ban yakitori, a reference to the incident in which the Permatang Pauh MP was denied entry into Japan.
Another meme depicts a scene from popular video game Mortal Kombat, which portrays Anwar as the hero in the game, Liu Kang, kicking Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who is drawn as the character Sub-Zero, while Shao Khan — PKR deputy president Azmin Ali — watches from a throne.
A similar meme is a scene from a video game, exhorting the player (Anwar) to “choose his fighter” from 12 options, all of whom are Azmin.
Another popular meme is a clip from the movie The Dictator, in which faces of Anwar, Azmin, Khalid and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s are photoshopped. In the video, Anwar “shoots” Azmin and Khalid in a 100m dash, then has the finish line brought to him, allowing him to win, while Lim takes a photo of Anwar.
Many Netizens also jokingly created ballot papers for their own candidacy and the fake parties they were running under, including Parti Hipster Malaysia and Parti Kacang Merah.
A meme is an idea, style or action which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the Internet.
