UALA LUMPUR: Popular South Indian actor Vijay has solidified his status as the GOAT (the acronym for 'Greatest of All Time') following the release of his much-anticipated film, aptly titled 'GOAT', which premiered worldwide on Sept 5. (The GOAT acronym is used to refer to or describe a person who is the best in his/her field.)

In fact, this blockbuster from Kollywood, as the Tamil-language film industry is referred to, garnered approximately RM2.4 million in advance cinema ticket sales in Malaysia alone before its release.

Veedu Production, one of the distributors for the movie in Malaysia, founder R. Denes Kumar said the film, currently screened in 160 cinemas nationwide, achieved the highest opening for a Vijay movie in Malaysia and reportedly collected over RM10 million within four days of its release.

"Expect the unexpected from the movie because you can't predict what happens next. The special appearances by various artistes make the film even grander," he told Bernama after attending the gala screening of the movie at LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre on Sept 5.

The event was attended by MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan, local celebrities and social media influencers as well as representatives from Varnam Malaysia, a digital portal for Malaysian Indian-based community news, interviews, reviews and other articles.

Vijay, whose real name is Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar and is referred to by fans as 'Thalapathy' (commander), has a huge fan following in India and globally. He is also among the highest-paid actors in Tamil cinema.

Directed by Venkat Prabhu, 'GOAT' revolves around a team of undercover agents from India's Special Action Task Force who become entangled with a mafia group. Vijay shines in dual roles, portraying both a responsible father and a ruthless son, thus showcasing his acting versatility.

The ensemble cast also includes Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Sneha and Laila, alongside Malaysian actor Muhammad Irfan Mohamed Zaini.

Five Star Trading, another distributor of the movie, general manager Dr Sai Suthan Krishnan said he expects the film to perform well, citing its strong content.

He also said the audience at the special screening of 'GOAT' comprised people from various racial backgrounds who, he added, were captivated by its "compelling narrative, powerful performances and action sequences".

"Seeing people of all races coming together to celebrate 'Thalapathy' Vijay's film was heartwarming. The inclusion of Malay subtitles enhanced the viewing experience for many of them," he said.

Sharing her thoughts on the movie, lawyer Kokila Vaani Vadiveloo, who was also present at the gala screening, said: "It was really a fun and fresh watch. It was a pleasant surprise to see actresses Sneha and Laila and actor Prashanth after such a long time. It was an action-packed ride filled with emotions and comedy."

She added she was never a big fan of Vijay, "but I think I am one now after watching 'GOAT'."

The release of 'GOAT' comes on the heels of Vijay's official entry into politics, a move that has been met with both excitement and speculation.
