JOHOR BAHRU: The state government announced a public holiday on December 17 following the victory of the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) football team in winning the Malaysia Cup and Malaysia Super League.

The State Government Secretary, Tan Sri Azmi Rohani said that the special holiday on the day of the event was intended to celebrate JDT's glorious success.

"Upholding the order of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, the Johor state government hereby decides to declare Sunday, December 17, as a special holiday for all the people of Johor.

"The granting of a special holiday for this event is the state government's appreciation to the parties involved and the people of Johor who have given unwavering support to the JDT football team which has made its own history in the national football arena.

"This also celebrates JDT's success in lifting the Malaysia Cup trophy last night," he said in a statement on Saturday.

Azmi said that the decision to declare a special holiday for the event was in line with the authority given under Section 9(1) of the General Holidays Act 1951 [Act 369].

On Friday night, JDT beat Terengganu FC 3-1 in the 2023 Malaysia Cup final at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, thus sweeping the four cups contested in the Malaysian football scene.

Previously, the Southern Tigers squad managed to defend the Sumbangsih Cup, FA Cup and Super League even though there were still two games left. -
