A woman was hacked to death with a machete by a man in an incident at Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth

BUTTERWORTH: A woman was hacked to death with a machete by a man in an incident at Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth on Tuesday.

The seriously injured 42-year-old victim was rushed to Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) but was pronounced dead at 11.58am.

Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Asri Shafie said the police received a call regarding the incident at 11.10am.




Mohd Asri said, the investigative team from the Seberang Perai Utara Criminal Investigation Division and the State Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) forensics conducted an investigation at the scene of the incident.

"Inspection found that there was CCTV footage in the nearby area as well as witnesses during the incident, the police continued the investigation based on the footage.

"The investigation found that there were cuts on the back of the neck and the left shoulder of the deceased. The seriously injured victim died at the hospital and was then sent to the Forensic unit for the post-mortem process," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Commenting further, Mohd Asri said that immediately after the incident, the suspect ran away and fell into the sea from the Penang Bridge.

"The suspect was rescued by the public and he was later arrested by the Police. The suspect is still receiving treatment at the hospital for his injuries," he said.

Mohd Asri said the case was investigated according to section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

In the meantime, Mohd Asri asked the public who have information about the case to contact the investigating officer of the case ASP Nasrina Darus at 04-5762222 ( ext: 2275 ) or any of the nearest police stations to assist with the investigation.
