SANDAKAN, Jan 19 -- The Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a trader believed to be trying to bribe a government department head with RM2,000 to expedite the approval process for selling oil to fishermen at Batu Putih Jetty here today.

In confirming the Jan 15 incident, Sabah MACC director S. Karunanithy said the suspect, a man in his 50s, was detained at the Kota Kinabalu MACC office after the department head reported the matter to MACC.

"The suspect is currently being held for 24 hours for further investigations.

"MACC praises the action of the head of department who reported the bribery case to MACC in accordance with Section 25 of the MACC Act 2009 which is the obligation to report transactions of bribery" he said.

Karunanithy also called on all civil servants in Sabah to come forward and report to MACC if there were any cases of bribery while on duty.
