Elderly man arrested for illegal possession of wildlife species

BINTULU, Jan 27 -- A 68-year-old local man was arrested for being in possession of wildlife species without any permit at a private property at Km10 Jalan Bintulu-Miri yesterday.
Sarawak Region 5 Marine Police Force Commander ACP Shamsol Kassim said the man was arrested at 1.45 pm by his men who conducted Op Khazanah with seven members of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) of Bintulu Division.
“Upon inspection, we found eight White Parakeets, a Grey Parakeet, four different species of parrots, four local tortoises and one giant tortoise in cages at the property,” he said in a statement here today.
The total market price of the animals was estimated at RM130,400.
Shamsol said the arrest and seizure were made in accordance with Section 48(1) of the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.
