Former Minister Zainuddin Maidin Dies. Solat Jenazah on Saturday - 9am

Solat jenazah akan diadakan di Surau At-Tarbiah, Jalan I, Taman Melawati pada pukul 9pagi esok sebelum Allahyarham dikebumikan di Tanah Perkuburan Taman Melawati.

PETALING JAYA: Former information minister Zainuddin Maidin has passed away. He was 79.

According to his younger brother, Abdul Lazam Maidin, Zainuddin, who was also a chief editor of Utusan Malaysia, died at the Serdang Hospital at 6.40pm after a heart attack.

He was rushed to the Emergency Unit of Putrajaya Hospital on Nov 12 and was admitted to the normal ward. He was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) the next morning after doctors detected fluid in his lungs.

On Dec 14, he was transferred to Serdang Hospital, where he passed away today.


Zainuddin was appointed information minister by then prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2006 and served until 2008.

He was the Merbok MP for one term from March 24, 2004 to March 8, 2008.

In 2018, he quit Umno and expressed support for the Pakatan Harapan government.

Leaders from both sides of the political divide today offered their condolences.

This included Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who expressed her condolences on Twitter.

Opposition leader and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also offered his condolences to the man, fondly known as Zam, saying that the nation had lost yet another “gem”.

Former prime minister Najib Razak reminisced about the days when he and Zainuddin worked together in Umno and in the Cabinet.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said the death of Zainuddin was a big loss to the country
