PETALING JAYA, May 7 — Police today urged people not to politicise an incident where a driver of an overloaded lorry with a PKR flag on its hood ignored warnings by authorities to stop and went on a rampage ramming into 15 cars in a bid to escape.

The driver was first spotted by a police patrol unit near Batu 9 Cheras, and was instructed to pull over as the vehicle was overloaded.

However, the driver, who appeared to be running amok, ignored police warnings and continued driving for another roughly 30km where he ended up in USJ1.

At least six mobile police vehicle unit from Kajang and Subang police headquarters trailed the suspect, but no drastic action was taken early on as police did not want to put other motorists in danger.

The incident, which was caught on camera and has been since shared on social media, showed a policeman finally opening fire at the lorry’s wheels to stop the driver from causing further damage.

After the vehicle finally came to a halt near an apartment in USJ1, the driver attempted to escape on foot. However, several passers-by managed to overpower the suspect and handed him over to the police who were trailing right behind.

The video recording showed a large PKR flag across the lorry’s hood.

Subang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohamad Azlin Sadari urged the public not to politicise the issue and said investigations are underway.

“For now this has nothing to do with politics. Let us investigate first.

“The suspect is in police custody and we will establish soon why he had attempted to escape police,” he said.

A background check on the suspect is being carried out.
