Tian Chua: PKR to back Prabakaran to keep Batu seat

The two-term MP says he will accompany the independent candidate to introduce him to voters in the constituency.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR will support independent candidate P Prabakaran to prevent the Batu parliamentary seat from falling into the hands of Barisan Nasional (BN), says incumbent Tian Chua.

“I will now accompany him to introduce him to voters in the constituency,” he told reporters after the High Court dismissed his suit to determine whether he was qualified to contest in the general election.

Tian Chua, who is PKR vice-president, said the party leadership had endorsed the move and Prabakaran had agreed to subscribe to the opposition manifesto.

Tian Chua also said PKR would provide election campaign materials to ensure that voters cast their ballots for Prabakaran.

“A mammoth gathering involving national leaders from Pakatan Harapan will be held within the next five days,” he added.

On nomination day last Saturday, Tian Chua was disqualified by returning officer Anwar Mohd Zain on the grounds that he had been fined RM2,000 by the court.

The High Court had fined him RM2,000 in March for insulting the modesty of a police officer by saying “stupid police” and other foul words outside the lobby of a hotel in 2014.

Tian Chua, who has held the Batu seat since 2008, filed an originating summons on Monday for the court to determine his legal status to contest in an election.

Apart from BN and PAS candidates, Prabakaran will also face another independent, Panjamorthy Muthusami.
