BALIK PULAU: A 31-year-old motorcyclist facing multiple traffic offences since 2003 finally had his day in court for 24 of those charges.
Having accumulated 27 arrest warrants and an outstanding traffic summons to his name, Khu Lye Hock was flagged down by police while riding along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah at 9.30pm on Saturday.
Riding a motorcycle without a licence for the past 15 years, he was a wanted man with 15 arrest warrants for not possessing a valid driving licence by the Balik Pulau district police and another 12 arrest warrants were served by the George Town district police since 2003 for various traffic offences and not having a driving licence.
At the Balik Pulau court yesterday, Khu was fined RM2,200 by the magistrate’s court after he pleaded guilty to all the charges.
Magistrate Nur Fadrina Zulkhairi, after taking into account the number of charges and points raised by the deputy public prosecutor as well as the counsel, fined Khu RM300 each for the six charges of driving without a licence and RM50 each for eight charges of riding a motorcycle without insurance, in default a day’s jail for each charge.
Nur Fadrina let Khu off with a warning for the remaining 10 charges.
Lawyer George Shek, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, said Khu was a carpet cleaner who earned RM1,300 a month and had two schoolgoing children, aged six and eight.
“His wife is a tailor who earns RM1,200 and he cannot afford to pay heavy fines.”
DPP Christhoper Enteri Anak Mawan urged for a heavier sentence as Khu had been committing the offences since 2008 in Balik Pulau.
As of press time, Khu had not paid the fines.
Penang Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Supt Wan Sharuddin Wan Omar said it was not common for someone to have this many warrants for traffic-related offences.
“Once he has served his sentence for the charges in the Balik Pulau court, he will be arrested and charged with traffic offences in George Town.
“I advise those who have not paid their summonses to do so and not wait too long as they will eventually be blacklisted,” he said.
