Following Samsung's unveiling of its next generation flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ at the Fira Barcelona exhibition centre in Spain, the sale dates and prices were immediately announced so fans can get their hands on the much-awaited models without delay.

Samsung Malaysia Electronics president Yoonsoo Kim confirmed that Malaysia will get the handsets on March 16, the same time it's released globally. The pre-order period will run from March 1 to 4, and early birds will be rewarded with a portable bluetooth speaker worth RM699.

The Galaxy S9 64GB will cost RM3,299 while the S9+ will come in several capacities – 64GB (RM3,799), 128GB (RM3,999), 256GB (RM4,399). Customers will also be able to trade in their phones – even non-Samsung models – for the S9 or S9+, at participating Samsung experience stores.

Both models will be available in Malaysia in three colours, namely Midnight Black, Coral Blue and the new Lilac Purple. However, the Titanium Gray will not be available immediately. Though the refreshed flagships share their predecessors' 5.8in and 6.2in Infinity Display, they offer superior cameras with dual aperture and improved image processing.

Samsung Electronics IT & mobile communications division president Koh Dong-Jin said the visual oriented upgrades – including the dual aperture lens, super slow-mo video capabilities and personalised AR Emoji – are answer to users who are increasingly communicating and expressing themselves through images.

"Nothing is more important than the images we share now, not the text we send or posts we upload.

"With the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we have reimagined the smartphone camera. Not only do they enable consumers to shoot great photos and videos anywhere, the smartphones are designed to help them connect to others and express themselves in a way that's unique and personal to them," he said, during the keynote.

The dual aperture lens allows the camera to shift from f/1.5 to f/2.4 to take better low light images, while the super slow-mo captures up to 960 frames per second, and AR Emoji scans the user's face to map out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions.

Both models have a front-facing 8-megapixel (f/1.7) camera and on the back a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel wide-angle OIS (optical image stabilisation) camera, but only the S9+ has an additional 12-megapixel (f/2.4) telephoto lens.

Other updates include IP68 water and dust resistance, expandable memory of up to 400GB, AKG tuned stereo speakers, Knox 3.1 defense-grade security platform, Intelligent scan which combines iris and facial recognition in addition to fingerprint authentication.
