PUTRAJAYA: A high profile businessman has been remanded for six days over claims he received RM19mil to help close investigations over the Penang mega project involving three main roads and an undersea tunnel.

The businessman will be remanded for six days until March 5.

On Monday, Magistrate Norhidayati Mohammad Nasroh allowed prosecutors from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to have the 37-year-old man in custody.

The businessman was detained after having his statement recorded at the MACC headquarters on Tuesday.

Sources familiar with the case said the man received the money in stages between July and August last year from construction companies after claiming that he would be able to settle the case.

He is the fifth person to be arrested over the probe on the feasibility studies of the mega project involving three main roads and an undersea tunnel.

Two high ranking Datuks from construction companies were remanded in early January, while a Datuk Seri chairman and a senior engineering consultant were detained last month.
