Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah proclaimed new Kedah Crown Prince
ALOR SETAR: Tunku Laksamana of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Ibni Sultan Sallehuddin has been proclaimed as the 20th Raja Muda of Kedah in a ceremony steeped in royal custom at the Istana Anak Bukit here.
Tengku Sarafudin, 50, succeeded his father Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, the former Tunku Laksamana of Kedah, who ascended the throne as the Sultan of Kedah on Sept 12.
The installation ceremony began at the Balai Penghadapan (Audience Hall) yesterday with Kedah State Secretary Datuk Bakar Din reading out the proclamation before Sultan Sallehuddin and Sultanah of Kedah Sultanah Maliha Tengku Ariff.
Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah then took his oath of office as the new Raja Muda and signed the document, witnessed by Syariah chief judge Syeikh Abdul Rahman Abdullah and High Court judge Datuk Hashim Hamzah.
Among those who attended the ceremony were Tunku Bendahara of Kedah Tan Sri Tunku Abdul Hamid Thani; Toh Puan Bendahara of Kedah Puan Seri Nora Abdullah; and Tunku Temenggong of Kedah Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim.

The others present were Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and wife Datin Seri Hizam Awang Ahmad; Education Minister and Padang Terap MP Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon.
Sultan Sallehuddin also conferred the Darjah Utama Seri Mahawangsa Yang Amat Dihormati (DMK) that carries the title of Datuk Seri Utama to Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah and the Darjah Kerabat Bergelar Empat that carries the title of Tunku Laksamana of Kedah to Tunku Shazudin Ariff.
Tengku Sarafudin was born in March 2, 1967, in Alor Setar and is the eldest son of Sultan Sallehuddin.
He married Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff, 46, in 2003.
The royal couple are blessed with two children – Tunku Zara Bahiyah, 13, and Tunku Sulaiman Badlishah, 10.
The ceremony also saw Tunku Shazudin Ariff proclaimed as the new Tunku Laksamana of Kedah.
