The Star entertainment journalists bagged two awards at the inaugural Malaysian Film Industry Journalism Awards 2017 (Akifma) on Friday night (Nov 24). The Star was the only English media to win at the award ceremony held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Angelin Yeoh, 29, clinched the Young Entertainment Journalist award. “Working all those late nights and weekends were worth it,” she said with a laugh. Yeoh was also nominated for Best Film Critique category for her review of 2016’s Interchange and Best Film Journalism award (print media) for a personality piece on critically-acclaimed director Dain Said.
Meanwhile, chief reporter Mumtaj Begum took home Best Film Journalism award (print media) for highlighting producer Tan Sri L. Krishnan’s contributions to the film industry. “There have been many people guiding me over the years in my writing. It is thanks to them that I am here,” she said.
The Star’s Malay-language portal mStar also picked up an award for Best Film Critique through freelancer Shazryn Mohd Faizal’s review of Hanyut.
Organised by The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), The Entertainment Journalists’ Association Of Malaysia (WHAM) and the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM), the award honours the best in film journalism.
