KUALA LUMPUR: Police have refuted claims that they seized artworks allegedly containing "elements of communism" from artists at the National Visual Arts Gallery (NVAG), here.

An online news portal had reported yesterday that police seized several artworks installed for the Kuala Lumpur Biennale 2017 exhibition on Tuesday after receiving complaints from the public.

The artworks were said to be produced by a group of five Malaysians from Pusat Sekitar Seni (PSS) and two Indonesians from Population Project.

City police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said there was no seizure, but police have opened an investigation paper based on a police report lodged by the public about the artworks.

"We only advised the curator that the artworks are not proper and they have been taken down and returned to the artists," he said.

It is learned that the group had pulled out from the exhibition.
