KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Two, possibly three, North Koreans wanted for questioning over the murder of the estranged half-brother of their country's leader were believed to have accompanied the coffin of the victim on a flight from Kuala Lumpur after Malaysia agreed a swap deal with the reclusive state.
Photographs obtained by Reuters from Japan's Kyodo news agency show Hyon Kwang Song, the second secretary at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur, and Kim Uk Il, a staff member of North Korea’s state airline Air Koryo were on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on Thursday evening.
The pictures match those released by the Malaysian police earlier. The coffin carrying the body of Kim Jong Nam was also believed to have been on the same flight, though this has not been confirmed by authorities.
Malaysian media reported that the third North Korean, Ri Ji U, also known as James, who had been hiding with them at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur was also allowed to go home. The three men and the coffin are expected to be transferred to a flight to Pyongyang.
Malaysian authorities released the body Kim Jong Nam to North Korea on Thursday, in a deal that secured the release of nine Malaysian citizens held in Pyongyang after a drawn out diplomatic spat.

The 54-year-old Tan Sri was remanded for five days until April 4 to allow anti-graft officers to investigate the Sultan's claim.
He is remanded under Section 16 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act.
The man arrived at 9.30am Friday escorted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers and was brought before Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman.
Clad in an MACC orange lock-up attire, the Tan Sri avoided flashing cameras and shielded his face.
The Tan Sri is represented by lawyers Datuk K. Kumaraendran, JR Tey and Datuk Joshua Kevin.
On Thursday, the MACC gave the man till midnight to come out of his "hiding" and surrender himself,  failing which his identity will be revealed.
Last Saturday, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar wrote on his official Facebook page that he was offered RM2mil to suggest the person's name to the Chief Secretary to the Government for a "Tan Sri" title.
Sources said the Sultan of Johor was “offended and insulted” by the individual.
The sources said the individual himself was obsessed with titles as “he calls himself Tan Sri Datuk Dr”.
It is understood that the MACC will investigate accusations that the individual was a “broker” for royal titles and also probe the source of his income.

South Korea's ousted president Park Geun-Hy was arrested early Friday over the corruption and abuse of power

Friday, 31 March 2017 | MYT 5:04 AM

South Korea's ousted leader Park Geun-Hye arrested

SEOUL: South Korea's ousted president Park Geun-Hye (pic) was arrested early Friday over the corruption and abuse of power scandal that brought her down.
The Seoul Central District Court issued a warrant to arrest Park on charges of bribery, abuse of authority, coercion, and leaking government secrets, after a marathon court hearing the previous day.
"It is justifiable and necessary to arrest (Park) as key charges were justified and there is risk of evidence being destroyed," the court said in a statement.
Park will immediately be taken from the prosecutor’s office where she has been awaiting the decision into custody in a detention centre near Seoul.
The former leader was grilled for nearly nine hours in court Thursday as a judge deliberated whether she should be arrested.
Looking grim-faced and pale, Park ignored a barrage of press flashbulbs and did not speak when she arrived at the Seoul Central District Court earlier in the day, nor when she left.
Being taken into custody will be a dramatic step in the disgrace of South Korea's first woman president, and is a key demand of the millions of people who took to the streets to protest against her as the scandal engulfed her leadership last year.
The former president was stripped of her immunity when she was dismissed from office by the country's top court earlier this month. Park, 65, has denied the accusations against her.
Choi Soon-Sil, Park's secret confidante at the heart of the scandal, is already on trial for forcing top local firms including tech giant Samsung to “donate” nearly $70 mil (RM309mil) to non-profit foundations which she allegedly used for personal gain.
Ahead of the hearing, prosecutors submitted around 120,000 pages of documents to the Seoul Central District Court relating to the charges against Park, and said it would be "counter to the principle of fairness" if she was not arrested.
"The accused is denying most of the charges, and there is a risk of destroying evidence in the future," they said.
Park becomes the third former leader to be arrested over corruption in Asia’s fourth-largest economy, where politics and big business have long been closely tied.
Samsung Electronics vice chairman Lee Jae-Yong, who was arrested last month in connection to the scandal, was in court for over seven hours for his hearing, and his detention was approved early the following day.
Opposition lawmakers had called Thursday for Park’s arrest.
"The least she can do as the ex-president who damaged national dignity is to admit her criminal acts, bow her head and seek forgiveness," said a spokesman for the main opposition Democratic Party.
An election to choose her successor will be held on May 9. Moon Jae-In, her rival in 2012 and a former Democratic Party leader leads opinion polls by large margins.
SLEEPNESS NIGHTS
Park, daughter of late dictator Park Chung-Hee, secured the largest vote share of any candidate in the democratic era when she was elected in 2012.
But she was impeached by parliament in December, as the scandal combined with mounting economic and social frustrations to trigger huge candlelit demonstrations. The Constitutional Court later upheld the decision.
Last week she underwent a 21-hour interrogation session at the prosecutors' office, having refused repeated requests to be interviewed while in power.
She had been "lost for words" when authorities asked for her arrest, the Chosun Ilbo daily quoted an unidentified pro-Park lawmaker as saying.
Another said she had been having "sleepless nights and skipping meals" since moving out of the presidential palace.
Park allegedly offered governmental favours to top businessmen who enriched Choi, including Samsung's Lee.
She is also accused of letting her friend, a high school graduate with no title or security clearance, handle a wide range of state affairs including nomination of top officials.
Park is also said to have cracked down on thousands of artists who had voiced criticisms of her or her father's iron-fisted rule from 1961 to 1979.
She has repeatedly apologised for the upset caused by the scandal but not admitted any wrongdoing, blaming Choi for abusing their friendship. - AFP

Newly-appointed Customs director-general Datuk T. Subromaniam has pledged to tackle corruption and beef up efforts against smuggling

New Customs head takes aim at corruption

PUTRAJAYA: Newly-appointed Customs director-general Datuk T. Subromaniam has pledged to tackle corruption within the department’s ranks and will beef up efforts against smuggling.
“We have declared war on smugglers,” he said at his first press conference as Customs chief.
Towards that end, the department would be arming its border officers by next week, said Subromaniam, who took over from Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad last week.
“At present, only officers who are handling imports and exports are stationed at the border gates. When those at the border spot something untoward, they will contact the enforcement officers who are the ones carrying firearms.
“Why should the officers with firearms be elsewhere in some office? They should be right there at the borders so that they can catch the smugglers on the spot.
Subromaniam said the department monitors more than 150 border points, which includes main entry points such as airports and harbours, as well as jetties and small landing areas.
He also said that under the National Blue Ocean Strategy, the department would collaborate with other enforcement agencies, such as navy, police, maritime enforcement, and the Immigration Department to strengthen its border control.
On tackling corruption, Subromaniam said that while most of his officers were clean, it cannot be denied that there were a few corrupt ones.
He said all 14,000 Customs officers were required to sign an anti-corruption pledge, which means they were obliged to report incidents of graft.
He said the department would launch a “Corruption Risk Management” tool to identify “areas which were high risk and prone to leakages or abuse of power”.
“The tool was developed with the help of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. We identify procedural weaknesses and strengthened these areas. It will be launched in June and hopefully it will be a game-changer in Customs administration,” he said.
The department will also be going all out after cigarette smugglers, setting itself a target of reducing the number of contraband cigarettes in the domestic market by 50% over the next three years.
“Contraband cigarettes are the commodity that is most-smuggled in the country and the Customs Department seized cigarettes worth RM648,917,373 in tax value last year. This is a huge increase from 2015’s RM315,433,119,” he said.

The chartered flight carrying 9 Malaysians from North Korea touched down at the KL International Airport (KLIA) at 5.03am Friday, after departing Pyongyang at 7.45pm

Malaysians tell of crucial support amidst North Korean trauma

SEPANG: Fellow diplomats in North Korea were a great source of support and help in trying times, said Malaysia's counsellor to North Korea.
Mohd Nor Azrin Md Zain thanked the Vietnamese, Indonesian, Laotian, Cambodian, Pakistani, Polish and Swedish embassies for their assistance in providing aid, including foodstuff.
"We were not harassed by the North Korean authorities, they told us that life would continue as normal.
"But the fact we weren't allowed to travel home was concerning," he told reporters an hour after touching down at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) early Friday morning.
"I would not deny that when the NK government imposed the ban, we had grave concerns as we had done no wrong," said Mohd Nor Azrin, thanking Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman for their efforts in bringing him and the other Malaysians home.
He said Malaysian embassy staff had taken turns to travel to Beijing for Euro currency and foodstuff prior to the ban but had to rely on the assistance of the embassies in Pyongyang after the travel restriction was put in place.
He added that they had to keep their spirits strong, knowing their families would be worried for them.
"We would like to spend time with our family members now," he said, calling a close to the brief press conference.
No questions from the media were taken during the conference.
The chartered flight carrying the nine touched down at KLIA at 5.03am, after departing Pyongyang at 7.45pm Malaysian time on Thursday.
The nine had spent 24 days of uncertainty in North Korea since the ban on them leaving was put in place on March 7.
Mohd Nor Azrin later told reporters that the nine were allowed to move around Pyongyang and that they continued their daily work as usual.
When asked if it was like living a nightmare, he said that they knew what was happening and kept their spirits up.
"We kept motivating each other ... we were very close, like a family," he said.
On whether he would consider returning to Pyongyang, Mohd Nor Azrin said that he would follow instructions

The chartered flight carrying the nine touched down at the KL International Airport (KLIA) at 5.03am Friday, after departing Pyongyang at 7.45pm Malaysian time on Thursday.
The nine had spent 24 days of uncertainty in North Korea, since the ban on them leaving was put in place on March 7.
The nine were the remaining Malaysian diplomatic corps in North Korea and their families, comprising Malaysia's counsellor to North Korea Mohd Nor Azrin Md Zain, his wife Iza Karmila Ramli and their children Annur Zulaikha, Aynur Zhafirah and Ayscha Zinnirah, personal assistant to the ambassador Noor Saaidah Jamaludin, her husband Mohd Radzuan Othman and eight-month old baby Mohamad Radhiy and administrative assistant Nirmala Malar Kodi Singaram.

Datuk Seri Anifah Aman with the nine Malaysians at KLIA on Friday

Relations between Malaysia and North Korea began to deteriorate after Kim Jong-nam, half-brother to the hermit kingdom's leader Kim Jong-un, was assassinated at KLIA 2 on Feb 13 while waiting for a flight to Macau.
Jong-nam was allegedly killed by two women, Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong and Indonesian Siti Aisyah, who smeared the deadly VX nerve agent on his face.
On Feb 19, police announced that seven more suspects were being sought, including North Korean embassy official Hyon Kwang-song.
Subsequently, diplomatic relations between Malaysia and North Korea began to sour and on Feb 20, North Korean ambassador Kang Chol said Pyongyang could not trust the results of the post-mortem conducted on Jong-nam.
He also accused Malaysia of being in collusion with South Korea.
The situation escalated when Malaysia expelled Kang Chol on March 6, prompting Pyongyang to bar Malaysian citizens from leaving North Korea on March 7.
Malaysia responded with a similar bar the same day, and stopped North Koreans from leaving the country.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that the coroner had approved the release of Jong-nam's body following the completion of the autopsy and receipt of a letter from his family requesting the remains be returned to North Korea.
A silver Toyota Alphard was seen leaving the North Korean embassy in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur at 3pm with at least five people on board, while a grey-coloured van was seen leaving the Hospital Kuala Lumpur mortuary for KLIA at about 1.40pm.
The van is believed to be have been carrying Jong-nam's body.
