PAC wants review of 1BestariNet programme

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) wants the Auditor General Department to undertake a second review of the RM4bil 1BestariNet project.
“PAC cannot accept the reason submitted by the Education Ministry that it was not aware on the value management lab circular,” PAC said in a report tabled in Parliament, Tuesday.
The 1BestariNet project, which involved 10,000 schools nationwide, had come under fire from both the AG and PAC for having failed to deliver on time.
Initiated in March 2011, the RM4bil project over a period of 15 years, was supposed to provide 4G broadband connectivity and virtual learning environment (VLE) to the schools.
However, the Ministry of Finance approved only RM663mil for a period of 30 months.
“PAC has decided that the Auditor-General Department carries out a thorough follow-up audit related to the matters raised and to carry out rectification as there are a lot of doubtful expenditures.
“The PAC also wants the Auditor-General Department to carry out the study on the effectiveness in implementing the 1BestariNet project,” PAC said.
PAC will also visit schools under the project, it added.
“The Auditor-General Department is also urged to review all 1BestariNet contracts to ensure the Government’s interest is protected,” it said.
