GEORGE TOWN: Four men who admitted to wrongfully confining two Singaporean brothers at six locations here, were jailed a day by a magistrate’s court.
Magistrate L. Umma Devi also fined each of them RM1,000 in default of one month’s jail.
Chee Kok Fang, 37, from Tanjung Bungah, Loke Kah Waoi, 23, from Air Itam, Koay Kean Teong, 26, from Tanjung Tokong and E. Boon Roy, 30, a Thai Malaysian from Perlis, pleaded guilty to jointly restraining businessmen Kenneth Ng Chee How and Gabriel Ng Chia How from about 4pm on Feb 22 to about 2.45pm on Feb 24.
The four, who had claimed trial to the offence on March 2, changed their plea yesterday and admitted committing the offence at Kedai Kopi Seong Huat in Jalan Larut, in rooms at Hotel Georgetown in Jalan Larut, Starbucks in New World Park, Three Bar in Kompleks Persiaran Gurney, Happy Bar in Jalan Burma and a room in Hotel Hong Kong, Jalan Tanjung Tokong.
The offence under Section 341 of the Penal Code carries a maximum one-month jail or fine not exceeding RM1,000, or both.
The accused served their jail sentence yesterday.
They were also given a stern warning by Umma Devi against repeating the offence in the future.
“The same opportunity will not be given to you if it happens for a second time,” she told the four.
In representing the four men, defence counsel R. Puran mitigated that the accused were first-time offenders, who felt remorse over their wrongdoing.
“Chee and Boon Roy were working as salesmen while the other two were unemployed. Chee is supporting two children while Boon Roy is married with a child.
“Koay also has elderly parents while Loke is young and trying to look for a job,” he said.
DPP Noor Azura Zulkiflee prosecuted the case.
