KUALA LUMPUR: Another Malaysian linked to the Islamic State (IS) was killed in a battle against Bashar al-Assad’s army on Sunday, bringing the total number of Malaysian militants killed in the service of the terror group to 19.
Special Branch director Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun when contacted said the force was informed of the death of Abd Ghani Yaacob, 31.
“Yes, he was killed in battle. To date, a total of 19 Malaysians linked to IS were killed there (in Syria and Iraq),” he said.
It was reported that Abd Ghani was killed after being shot in the chest in a battle at the Al Khair province.
The report said Abd Ghani was linked to the six militants who were charged yesterday with their involvement with IS.
He was allegedly drawn to the conflict in Syria via Facebook and had taken an interest in the Salafi Jihadi teachings by IS in 2013.
Abd Ghani, who was previously a crane operator in Kuala Lumpur but hailed from Kedah, was said to have networking ties with several other IS militants from the state.
He was also known as Abu Bashir Al Malazy or ‘Abu Kedah' among the members of the group.
It was learnt that Abd Ghani had left for Syria with the help of Mohammad Wanddy Mohamed Jedi, a Malaysian militant who recruited others through social media platforms such as Facebook and Telegram.
