Extended remand likely for six cops on payroll of drug ring
THE STAR
PETALING JAYA: Police are looking to extend the remand of six policemen who were nabbed for being on the payroll of a major drug syndicate.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said the remand order against the six - an inspector and five lance-corporals - ends Thursday.
"We will apply to have it extended," he said on Wednesday.
Comm Abdul Samah said the six were picked up after discrepancies were discovered when the syndicate was brought down in one of the biggest drug busts of the year, involving RM36mil worth of syabu.
"At the moment, the case is still being investigated by Bukit Aman so I do not want to say too much," said Comm Abdul Samah, who is known to be tough on rogue policemen who put the force in a bad light.
This includes the recent charging in court of two policemen who allegedly let off a suspect who allegedly had raped a four-year-old girl.
It is learnt that the six, from the Serdang and South Klang district police, had been receiving payments from the drug syndicate.
Last week, a team from Bukit Aman's Narcotics Investigation Department and Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) arrested 10 people and raided seven locations in Shah Alam and Perak.
On Saturday, three days after the bust, the inspector and lance-corporals were arrested along with a civilian accomplice.
Police also found large sums of cash hidden in two of the policemen's houses.
