JERTIH: A 'wefie' attempt by five university students on Bukit Keluang almost proved to be their downfall when the group lost their footing and fell 24m into a ravine.
The Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) students, comprising two men and three women, all aged 20, fortunately escaped serious injuries in the 1pm incident.
One of them, Safiuddin Naif Johari, 24, from Kota Bharu, Kelantan fractured his foot and sustained bruises on his body.
Safiuddin’s sister Nor Fatihah, 32, and her fiancĂ© Nor Nalini Mohamad, 20, attempted to help but also slipped and fell, sustaining injuries.
Besut Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Zailani Abdullah said that the two men and the woman were successfully rescued by firemen and Civil Defence Department personnel hours later in the evening.
At Press time, rescuers were attempting to secure the other two victims.

Zailani said the students were part of a 20-member team that hiked up the hill.
“We acted after receiving a distress call from one of the team members at 1.15pm. Upon arrival, we worked out a plan to rescue the two victims and hope to bring in the other three victims.
“Our work is hampered by the depth of the ravine,”said Zailani.
The two victims have been sent to the district hospital for treatment.
