CCTV system will alert security personnel at the control centre to easily observe, track, and monitor all the detainees a LockUps

SMART way to heighten security in lockups

KUALA LUMPUR: A new self-monitoring system has been introduced to increase the level of security in police lockups.

Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the Defence Services Asia 2016 yesterday, the Self Monitoring Analytics Reporting Technology (SMART) is one of the latest systems acquired by the police force.
Federal Strategic Resources and Technology director Comm Datuk Zaleha Abdul Rahman said to date, 58 out of the 704 lockups across the country had been equipped with the RM3.5mil SMART network of closed circuit cameras (CCTVs) to heighten inmates’ security.
“The system was developed by police together with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s research arm Mimos and Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).
“The emphasis of the new system is on the adoption of the latest and emerging technologies, to replace conventional CCTVs,” she said in a statement.
The SMART lockup CCTVs are placed in each cell and the surrounding areas to detect any movement or suspicious behaviour among inmates and officers on duty.

Among the activities that can be detected are aggression, climbing and loitering.
She said the system would also ensure high integrity standards by the police.
“The management of lockups in the country will be enhanced through this system,” she said.
It was reported earlier that the CCTV system will alert security personnel at the control centre and will help officers to easily observe, track, and monitor all the detainees, with minimum need for lockup officers to make rounds.
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Armed Forces Chief Jeneral Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin were present during the launch.
