At a packed press conference held at his office in Wisma Darul Aman, Mukhriz said the resignation will take effect immediately.

"I feel a heavy burden shifted off my shoulders," he said.
Mukhriz said he had also rejected an offer to be a deputy minister offered by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"I will continue to be vocal . Umno must undergo drastic transformation," he said.
Replying to a question on who he wished to be his replacement, Mukhriz said: "Ahmad Bashah."
Mukhriz said he has not informed his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of his decision to resign.
