KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 156 out of 507 contract professors, aged 61 to 70 years old, who are employed with local public universities did not have their contrasts renewed due to the reduced allocation in several public universities, Kosmo! Online reports.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Professors Council (MPN), Prof. Datuk Dr. Raduan Che Rose was quoted as saying that the service of these professors currently involved in teaching and research at local public universities should be valued and their valuable contribution evaluated, not abruptly terminated.
Dr. Raduan noted: "According to MPN profile, more than half of the lecturers with the title of professor in the country are now aged 55 years, which means they have only five years more to serve and pass their expertise to the next generation."
According to the report, Malaysia has 2,254 professors at the moment. Of which, 1,867 are employed with local public universities whereas the rest are employed with private universities.
It is also understood that the Government will need to spend up to RM3 million to produce each new academic professional of professorial standard.
