A RIOT nearly broke out in a town in Tamil Nadu after word spread that a container lorry which had crashed into a lake in the area was carrying nearly five billion rupees (RM300mil), Malaysia Nanban reported.
The driver lost control of the lorry on Saturday after trying to avoid some goats which were crossing the road.
The incident, which happened near Nagercoil, spiralled into news being circulated that the container had been transporting equipment for manufacturing rockets.
But it was affirmed later that the lorry was transporting currency to the Reserve Bank of India in the neighbouring state of Kerala.
After the accident, police secured the area with the help of paramilitary forces and began efforts to recover the container.
The vehicle was lifted from the lake and the cash was retrieved for transportation by smaller armoured lorries.
The driver suffered minor injuries.
