Transfer of Abdul Hamid worrying, says former IGP
PETALING JAYA: The circumstances surrounding the transfer of Bukit Aman’s Special Branch deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador “is very worrying”, says former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Rahim Noor.
Rahim said there were already concerns when the head of the Special Branch, DCP Datuk Akhil Bulat, was replaced in July – a few weeks before his contract expired.
“The Number One is no more there, and now the Number Two is being transferred.
“Any right thinking person would know that for continuity, it would be better not to change the top two (simultaneously),” he said.
Rahim said he was not taking sides, but felt compelled to voice his dissatisfaction over the manner in which the transfer took place.
DCP Abdul Hamid had worked under Rahim when he was the director of the Special Branch for nearly four years (from January 1986 to December 1989).
“He is very intelligent and very dedicated. He is an intelligence officer through and through. It is in his blood.
“As a boss, I never had any doubts about him. The interest and security of the country was always uppermost for him.
“He was dedicated to the Special Branch. He would do everything to safeguard the integrity, image and dignity of the Special Branch,” he said when referring to DCP Abdul Hamid’s unexpected transfer from Bukit Aman to the Prime Minister’s Department last Thursday.
At a press conference on Sunday, DCP Abdul Hamid alleged that there were “invisible powers” who were uneasy with him being the Number Two in the Special Branch.
DCP Abdul Hamid said this might have had to do with him insisting that the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue be fully investigated.
DCP Abdul Hamid also said the Special Branch had advised the Government to explain the issue clearly to the people and urged those involved in it to also come forward to explain.
On his part, Rahim said he was fully sympathetic with DCP Abdul Hamid.
“It is as if there is a move to shut the mouths of whoever that goes against the interest of certain quarters in the 1MDB issue,” said Rahim.
He also praised DCP Abdul Hamid for “going public” over the transfer.
“The fact that he made the statement while he is still in government service shows his true colours. He is that sort of person.
“He is brave because he (believes he) is right,” said Rahim, adding that “the truth must be made to prevail” on 1MDB.
“We need to know who is right and who is in the wrong,” said Rahim, commenting on the issue for the second time.
On May 30, he urged the Police’s Commercial Crime Division to start investigations on 1MDB’s dealings in September 2009 as they seemed “questionable”.
