KUALA LUMPUR: Five men were arrested in relation to a robbery and a snatch theft case near a cyber cafe in Jalan Genting Klang.
The suspects, aged between 18 and 32, were arrested in five separate locations in Danau Kota on Saturday and Sunday between 10pm and 8am.
Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the arrest came after an incident last Thursday where two of the suspects had attempted to snatch a sling bag belonging to a 34-year-old man.
In the 4.50am incident, the travel agent had just visited a cyber cafe with three friends when two men on a motorcycle rode near before one of the trying to snatch the bag away at the parking lot.
"The suspects failed to flee with the bag. That prompted the duo to alight from their vehicle before trying to attack the group with a parang.
"Seeing that one of their friends had injured his palm in the scuffle, the group then called for help before the suspects fled on foot, leaving the motorcycle behind," he said at a press conference on Monday.
Supt Roy said the suspects then came back with six accomplices to retrieve their vehicle 20 minutes later.
"What they didn't know is that the key was taken by the victim's friends as evidence before they drove off to a nearby hospital.
"Infuriated, the suspects then barged into the cyber cafe to track the victims but only to find the caretaker and two customers in it.
"That didn't stop them from attacking the customers with parang and stealing their handphones," he said, adding that the caretaker was unhurt.
Supt Roy said a 14-year-old boy who heard the commotion from outside the premise was also assaulted.
"The suspects had just exited the cafe when they stumbled upon the teenager. Initially, he tried to help but was instead attacked by one of them.
"The teenager sustained minor injuries to his right elbow and head," he said.
Supt Roy said the five suspects admitted to their involvement in the case during questioning.
"They were remanded for four days since their arrests but we are in the process of extending the remand order," he said.
The weapon used in the case has also been seized.

Checks by police found that the main suspect, who was still at large, has two previous records involving robbery last year.

The case is being investigated for robbery and voluntarily causing hurt.

Police are now seeking for one "Salman" to facilitate the investigations. His last address was Danau Kota.

Those with information of Salman's whereabouts are urged to contact the investigating officer Insp Mohd Faisal Abd Khalid at 0392899222.
