KUALA LUMPUR April 2, 2015:
A video believed produced for a college assignment turned viral after its message promoting racial unity struck a chord with netizens in the country.
The two-minute 43 second video, posted on March 30 showed a social experiment using an actor to play an Indonesian worker who had just arrived in Malaysia.
He is seen asking the patrons at a mamak stall to translate the contents of a Facebook friend-request message on his phone, which he pretended not to understand.
The patrons who were randomly filmed expressed shock by the racially taunting message and some refused to even explain the contents to the actor, with others even telling him to ignore such messages. Some even swore profanities at the contents of the message.
One patron even said that “not all Malaysians are like this” and offered to pay for the actor’s meal.
The video taken by college student Calvin Tan, 21, and his group of friends has since garnered 2,090 shares and 1,451 likes and has since successfully stirred the hearts of Malaysians.
One Facebook user Shareena Nair posted: “Good Job! The way they react in real sake..totally inspiring. Our Malaysians:)”
While another Facebook Aqil Al-Mashoor said: “Rarely do people show compassion these days to other racial ethnicity in a vast cultural diversity we all known as humanity regardless their background, such a great video to resemble racial equality, hats off !
