KUALA LUMPUR: The latest Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC) 2016 requires airlines to issue refunds to consumers according to the original payment method within 30 days.

Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) Director of Consumer and Public Affairs, Pushpalatha Subramaniam explained that consumers are also entitled to a refund for carbon fee charges if these are imposed by airlines.

"So far, only Malaysia Airlines has started a voluntary carbon offset program, where, in case of flight delay or cancellation, users are entitled to receive a refund," he said during a question and answer session held in conjunction with the MACPC amendment briefing today.

He when commenting on the carbon fee reiterated that Mavcom does not control this matter, and it is up to the airlines to decide whether to charge it and determine the value.

"Other airlines may charge it as well, but in cases where an airline charges a carbon fee, users with refundable or non-refundable tickets should get a refund. This is in addition to other mandatory refunds, such as fuel surcharges, taxes, The fee includes charges such as departure levy and passenger service charges," he added.

Touching on the recent situation involving the Malaysia Airlines flight to Seoul, Pushpalatha confirmed that passengers are entitled to a refund under the latest MACPC.

Reportedly, a Malaysia Airlines flight to Incheon Airport in Seoul, South Korea, had to turn back immediately after taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
