SUNGAI PETANI: The police had to chase a car from Bakar Arang, Sungai Petani for about 60 kilometers (km) before arresting two suspects at Penang Bridge here early yesterday morning.

Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan said, one of the suspects also jumped into the sea from the bridge before being rescued by fishermen and handed over to the police.

He said the two men in their 20s and 40s were suspects wanted by the Pendang District Police Headquarters (IPD) because they were believed to be involved in a drug abuse case.

"Members of the Patrol Car Unit (MPV) spotted a car in a suspicious condition at the Light Industrial Area in Bakar Arang at about 1.30am.

"Following that, members tried to stop the car in question to carry out an inspection but the driver sped off entering the North South Highway (PLUS) heading south.

"Two MPVs chased the vehicle involved which then went on the Penang Bridge to escape," he said when contacted by Astro AWANI today.

Zaidy said that the MPV unit requested help from the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) to arrest the suspect, but the vehicle was spotted turning back using the bridge to go to the mainland.

He said, the car that was being driven recklessly was then involved in an accident at about 3 am with another vehicle on the bridge before the driver jumped into the sea.

"However, the suspect was rescued by a fisherman, while his friends was detained in the car involved.

"A check inside the car did not reveal any prohibited items or dangerous weapons," he said.
