KUALA LUMPUR: Four Latin Americans were arrested with one of them injured in a police shooting after robbing RM190,000 from a woman in Cheras, here, today.
The group robbed the victim who had just withdrawn cash at a bank in Cheras before being spotted by police who chased their car all the way to Jalan Berhala, Brickfields, in the 1pm incident.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan said earlier, their activities were detected as a result of public complaints and intelligence teams at the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters and Sentul District Police Headquarters.
"Information was received that there was a group trying to plan a robbery at several banks around the district.
"The suspects, including two women, visited several banks around Sentul and Dang Wangi.
"The suspect punctured the tire of a woman's car (at a bank in Cheras) before following her to a petrol station in Cheras and robbing the victim.
"Police intercepted the suspect's car at Jalan Berhala Brickfields, but they continued to act aggressively by ramming the police vehicle," he said here today.
He said the police fired several warning shots to force them to stop but the suspects remained adamant.
He said police had to fire at the front suspect who was driving the car when he tried to ram into the officers and police vehicles.
He said the male suspect was shot in the right chest and taken to hospital for treatment. Three more suspects were detained to assist in the investigation.
He said the police managed to recover the money stolen from the victim.
