PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Xavier Jayakumar is denying that a man arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was his aide, after several media had named him as such.
The former water, land and natural resources minister under Pakatan Harapan said he had never condoned corruption and “will never abandon my values as one of the early reformists in Keadilan”.
He said he was seeking to clear his name with the authorities after he was named in a number of media reports over the arrest of Perak PKR deputy chairman MA Tinagaran.
According to PKR sources, Tinagaran was arrested yesterday morning and a car and cash were seized by the MACC. It has also been reported that he will be remanded for six days to assist in investigations.
In a statement, Xavier denied the reports that described Tinagaran as his former aide.
“In a recent media report, my name was implicated, and it has brought prejudice against me as an elected representative. Acting on the advice of my family and friends, I am here to clear my name with the authorities.
“I also hope the public will show respect for the authorities in the handling of an investigation involving MA Tinagaran who is not an aide of mine as falsely reported, but a close family friend.”
He said any leader with ties to corruption must be held accountable, adding that PKR would not stand for any form of graft.
