SHAH ALAM: Police have busted a gang of armed robbers terrorising residential areas in three states since last year.

The gang made off with valuables worth more than RM1.5mil.

The robbers wore masks similar to the masked character from the V for Vendetta movie and targeted houses with the front door open.

Armed with machetes and a pistol, the group would climb into the house and sometimes hurt the victims in order to get jewellery and cash.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said police made their big break when they arrested a male suspect at about 8.30pm on Monday at Pusat Bandar Puchong.

“Following interrogation and investigation, we launched a series of follow-up raids and arrested five others in Klang, Puchong, Selayang and Shah Alam on the same day.

“We seized a pistol, several machetes, masks, gloves and adhesive tape, ” he told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters yesterday.

He said police also seized nine vehicles which included a Volkswagen Vento, Toyota Camry, Toyota Altis and Honda CRV.

“All the suspects have records for various crimes. We have linked the suspects to at least 48 robberies in Selangor (40), Kuala Lumpur (six) and Negri Sembilan (two), ” he said.

Police are now tracking the remaining members of the gang.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, SAC Fadzil said police seized 88 airsoft rifles and pistols, two airsoft weapons that had been modified to shoot live ammunition and a real pistol.

“The weapons were sold by a man and a woman via social media to hobbyists.

“We first arrested a man on Feb 20 which led us to the arrest of another man and a woman four days later, ” he said, adding that when they arrested the duo, they also seized six airsoft pistols and two rifles as well as live ammunition.

He said investigations revealed that modifications had been made to the airsoft weapons that allowed them to shoot live ammunition.

“The finished products were sold all over Malaysia for between RM5,000 and RM10,000.

“We immediately set up a task force and managed to arrest 43 suspects, including four women, ” he said, adding that 18 were arrested in Selangor, five in Perak, four in Kuala Lumpur and four in Kedah.

He said they also seized a factory-made weapon, two modified airsoft weapons capable of firing live rounds, 57 Airsoft pistols, 31 Airsoft rifles, 10 explosive devices and three hand grenades as well as 1,355 rounds of live ammunition.

“Sixteen of the suspects arrested in Selangor have already been charged in court while two others are still under investigation.

“Based on our investigations, the man arrested on Feb 24 is an expert in modifying these weapons and had the weapons and parts shipped in by a third party from a neighbouring country, ” he said, adding that the live ammunition was acquired locally.
